Inverness is the Northenmost town of any real size in Scotland, at the head of the Inverness firth and at the north-eastern end of the Great Glen, which contains the Caledonian Canal. Through it flows the River ness. A prominent feature are the County Buildings made of Red Sandstone. They are often mistaken as the Castle that features in Macbeth (as well as by some as the earlier residence of King Brude) but that is believed to have stood on the summit of the ridge to the east of the City.
Inverness is known as the Gem of the Highlands, and is located in the north of Scotland, close to Loch Ness in the dramatic countryside of the Highlands. Throughout the year there are many events celebrating the wonderfully unique traditions and culture of the Highlands, including arts festivals, and events dedicated to sports, heritage, language and science. Inverness and the surrounding area has a rich heritage, boasting prehistoric cairns as well as a multitude of historic castles, palaces and stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture. The earliest trace of man in the Highlands can be seen at the Tarbat Discovery Centre, where Glenelg Brochs and Pictish Stones are treasured.
Inverness Castle was built on the side of a cliff in 1835. The castle has a spectacular view of the beautiful river which is home to the Sheriff’s Court. In the eleventh century Shakespeare’s famous play Macbeth was performed in the east side of the castle. The tour of the castle Garrison is very interesting and will take you back through time to 1745, providing a wealth of knowledge about the castle’s history. The tour takes approximately forty minutes and allows you to enjoy spectacular views, and the beautiful floral displays located to the rear of the castle. Legend has it that the ghost of King Duncan was once seen walking beside the river Ness with his regalia on.

The museum contains a detailed history of the Highlands, as well as Jacobean artifacts, Inverness Silverware, ancient Highland weapons and Scottish bagpipes.
