Perth on the West Bank of the Tay is surrounded by beautiful scenery and was for many years Scotlands capital city. Notable sites include the Art Gallery and Museum and the Museum of the Black Watch. The Tay is famous for its Salmon, Wool as well as many a notable Whisky. Once famous for its Dye works and important Cattle Markets it is often viewed as the gateway to the Highlands.
Perth is a lovely city in the heart of rural Scotland. It is the biggest city in the county of Perthshire, and the pretty river Tay runs through it. Perth is located in central Scotland and is less than an hour from Edinburgh, which can be reached by train, bus or by car. There are many beautiful villages and towns to visit in Perthshire, such as Aberfeldy, Auchterarder, Gleneagles, Crieff, Comrie, and Gleneagles. Perth is a historical city with a nearby stone circle dating back to 4000 BC.
Perth is well known for its strong cultural traditions and its art, in particular the rich national and international collections held in Perth Museum and Art Gallery. In addition the Perth Fergusson Gallery displays the largest collection of paintings by the famous Scot, John Duncan Fergusson. There are a number of smaller art galleries in Perth where you can find unique individual paintings and collections, as well as information about Scottish art throughout the country.
Perth has many beautiful historic buildings, many of which are used as locations for the city’s cultural activities. St. John’s Kirk is one of the oldest churches in Scotland and is used to host various music events throughout the year. There is a bridge near Perth High Street which has been rebuilt and repaired several times, since the original bridge was swept away by floods in 1209. This bridge is mentioned in a charter of Robert the Bruce, and there are records which refer to the repair of the bridge throughout the 14th to 16th centuries. The bridge was swept away again by a great storm which flooded the river Tay in 1621. For over 150 years the bridge was not rebuilt and over thirty boats were used to ferry people back and forth across the river, however trade reduced dramatically and Perth’s economy suffered. Smeaton’s Bridge was built in 1771, and in 1902 the Victoria Bridge was built to link South Street and Dundee Road. There is a boatman’s graveyard within Kinnoull Parish Church graveyard.
Perth is famous for its harbour due to its strategic position in central Scotland, close to Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow. The harbour is situated to the east of Perth High Street and is mentioned in the historic Guilldry book of 1539. The Merchant and Lime Quays provides a bigger harbour for the larger ships and was reconstructed during the 18th century.
There are many lovely places to visit in Perth, either for a day trip away or for a longer holiday.
