Oban is a lovely town with an historic and busy port, located on the North West coast of Scotland in one of the best areas for a Scottish holiday. The population of Oban is over 8,500 people. The original name for the town was An Ob, which means Little Bay in Gaelic, the historic language of Scotland. Oban is often referred to as the Capital of the West Highlands and the Gateway to the Isles. Oban offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, lochs and islands, and standing above the town allows a perfect view of Oban itself, with its beautiful traditional Scottish buildings, port and coastline. Indeed the beauty of Oban town has attracted many different artists, poets, and composers for several centuries. There are many other great places to see which are beyond the town of Oban including the islands of the Inner Hebrides such as the Kerrera, the Low, Lismore, Mull, Iona, Colonsay, and Tiree. In addition the granite mountains of Morvern are definitely worth a visit.
Oban and the surrounding coast line occupy a place in history as a Royal Kingdom, just like many other parts of Scotland. The area dates back to the sixth century Kingdom of Dalriata, which was ruled by three brothers, Fergus Mor, Aonghas and Loarn Mac Eric. Their Kingdom was established following the death of their father, at a time when the Stone of Destiny was in their possession. The Stone was used by Jacob as a pillow, and was brought to Oban from Egypt by the King of the Scottie tribe. In later years the Stone was used at ceremonies for the King of Scotland. There is a lovely castle at the north side of Oban which is called Dunollie Castle, offering spectacular views of the sea and Oban harbour.
The town of Oban has a lovely traditional Scottish feel about it and boasts many Victorian buildings, set amongst little hills and the beautiful harbour. In 1812 the steam train linked Glasgow to Oban which made the town very important in terms of local trade. Today the railway remains an excellent way in which to travel the coast line of Scotland. There is also a large distillery of Scottish whisky set in the hills behind Oban bay. It was built as a result of an extensive rebuilding and expansion project at the end of 1800s, when the side of the hill was cut through to create new building space. At some point during the project a large cave was discovered which had in it many objects dating back to 4500 BC, and even human bones. The objects can still be seen when visiting the distillery, where the history of Oban and the importance of the west coast of Scotland is also explained. Another very interesting place to visit is Kilmartin Glen, situated close to Oban. It is where a number of monuments from the pre historic era are located, including burial cairns and old stones which are evidence of Oban's rich history within Scotland.
There are many types of excellent accommodation in Oban and the surrounding area, to please all tastes, family sizes and budgets. This includes Hotels, Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts, Self Catering, Cottages, and Farm houses, spread throughout this lovely part of Scotland. Oban is really an excellent place to have a holiday, and a base from which to explore all of the small villages along the coast, as well as day trips to the Scottish islands.
