Many visitors to Scotland have heard stories about the Loch Ness Monster and want to visit Loch Ness to see if they can spot .Nessie.. But even for those who don.t believe in Nessie.s existence, Loch Ness remains one on the most beautiful lochs in Scotland and an accessible opportunity to experience the spectacular tranquillity of the Scottish Highlands.
Loch Ness is 23 miles long and is located roughly between Fort William in the South and Inverness in the North. Loch Ness is the loch with the second largest surface area in Scotland (after Loch Lomond). However, due to its incredible depth of up to 230m in places, it is the Scottish loch that contains the largest volume of water and, incredibly, contains more freshwater than all the freshwater lakes in England and Wales combined. There are a number of pretty villages along the banks of the loch and many of these offer accommodation and amenities for tourists.
The south bank of Loch Ness offers a complete get away for those who are searching for more solitude and tranquillity. There are numerous opportunities for gentle outdoor pursuits such as walking and horse-riding amongst the scenic natural beauty; you may be lucky enough to see deer in the more remote areas. This area is better known for it.s artist studios and craft workshops rather than visitor centres and museums. There are several small pretty villages that offer accommodation, such as the much photographed Dores where visitors could stay at the 4-star Pottery House Bed and Breakfast or the family run Beinn Dhearg Guest House with it.s log fire and views out over the loch. Further south the village of Foyers is famous for the spectacular nearby waterfall and is home to the Foyers Bay House Hotel, a refurbished Victorian villa where guests can look out over the loch to the stunning Urquhart Castle on the northern bank.
The A82 runs approximately down the north side of the loch, linking several small towns that offer greater facilities for tourists. If you have any interest at all in the Loch Ness Monster, Drumnadrochit is a place not to miss, with 2 visitor centres focussing on the subject. It is also the town nearest to the dramatic Urquhart Castle which is open to the public and provides a fascinating background into the history of the area. The Aslaich Bed and Breakfast offers comfortable accommodation with satellite TV and traditional log fires.
Further south, Fort Augustus is dominated by the 19th century Caledonian Canal that runs through the middle of the town. The series of lochs that enables the water to .run upstream. fascinates many adults and children alike! Fort Augustus is also traditionally a resting place for those walking the Great Glen Way and is, therefore, used to catering to weary travellers. A trip to the Rare Breeds Croft is a particularly unusual activity for families visiting the area. The nearby village of Invermoriston is well worth a visit, with more spectacular waterfalls and traditional architecture. Visitors have the choice of a wide range of accommodation, including the Bracarin House Bed and Breakfast at Invermoriston, orThe Aucteraure Country House, a converted traditional farm house which offers extensive grounds, an .old-world charm. and spectacular views across the Great Glen from all of its rooms.
Towards the southern end of the northern bank of Loch Ness, Ardgarry Farm Bed and Breakfast in the village of Invergarry is a small working farm that offers flexible accommodation for visitors to Loch Ness. Guests can choose between self catering properties, a guest house or a small log cabin with budget accommodation.
