Isle of Skye located in the North West of Scotland is well known for snow-capped Cuillin Ridge - beautiful during the summer months. You can reach Skye via Kyle of Lochalsh which has a direct Train route from Aberdeen. Skye There are wet days as in all mountainous districts (and visitors should not go unprepared for them) but there are also many fine days , particularly in June. The island is of extremely irregular shape some 50 miles from end to end with a width varying from 4 to 25 miles. The principal place are Portree , Broadford, Kyleakin and Dunvegan. Overlooking the pier is the ruined Castle Moil , reputed to have been built by a Danish princess nicknamed “Sauce Mary” who stretched a chain across the Kyle and allowed no ship to pass without paying toll.

Isle of Skye

Accommodation on the Isle of Skye is varied and full of character. Portree, the unofficial ‘capital’ of the island is a lively small harbour town, 36 miles from the controversial bridge that links Skye to the mainland. It offers a selection of Bed and Breakfast accommodation and Guest Houses including Braeside B&B, a converted farm-house. Another popular tourist destination is Dunvegan, home of Dunvegan Castle, the seat of Clan Macleod since the thirteenth century. Self-catering options in Dunvegan include Kinnemond Cottage and the 4-star Lochbay Boathouse. For those looking for a taste of traditional island life, there are several converted crofter’s cottages that have been fully converted for use as self-catering holiday properties. Examples include Half of Two in the village of Torrin and The Old Croft House in Aird which has beautiful views across the bay to Eigg, Rhum and Knoydart. For those looking for a little luxury, the Cuil Lodge Guest House in Uig offers beautiful views of both sea and the Cuilin mountains.

Broadford is the second largest community on Skye although the term 'Parish' would be more aptly descriptive than 'village' the Houses and B&B's being spread over a considerable area. The main portion overlooks Broadford Bay, where boating and fishing can be enjoyed.

The Coolins (or Cuillines) undoubtedly provide the most splendid mountain scene and the finest climbing in Britain It is not a question of height or extent (for the highest point is but 3251 feet above the sea and the main group measures only about 8 miles by 6 in extent) but of proportions as a result of which the peaks seem to soar to a much greater height than they do in fact and possess a sublimity which is not encountered elsewhere in Britain.

The best known and most popular of the Coolins is undoubtedly Sgurr nan Gillean (3,167 feet) 'the peak of the young men' all in all probably the most difficult 'tourist' mountain in Scotland .The easiest way up it has some steps especially nearing the top that are distinctly trying to the uninitiated and several people have lost their lives on it because they did not treat the mountain with the care and respect in deserves. It should not be attempted without a guide.

Portree is the most considerable community on Skye. It is a compact little place on hillside partly enclosing its Harbour, a bay on the picturesque Portree Loch. The immediate neighbourhood is well wooded a few minutes away are heather covered hills and beyond them on the one hand are the glorious Coolins and to the north the extraordinary Storr Rock.

The Outer Hebrides
The Outer Hebrides consist of bleak stretches of bog or moor land and the scenery is only saved from being monotonous by the numerous lochs and inlets of the sea and by picturesque ranges in Harris, South Uist and Barra. The salmon and trout in the streams and lochs mainly attract sporting visitors to the Outer Hebrides.

Harris, the southern part of the island, is in Inverness – shire, is mountainous in surface, and is chiefly occupied as deer- forests. The chief town is Tar Bert (Harris Hotel) Clisham (2.622 feet) the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides can be conveniently ascended from Tar Bert. There is some good salmon and sea – trout fishing held by the hotels at Tar Bert and Obbe or Lever burgh also sea – fishing etc.

Near Lever burgh at Rodel on the southern extremity of the island, are the considerable remains of an ancient church.

Some 52 miles west of Harris ist nearest neighbour, is the lonely island of St.Kilda, now in the possession of the National Trust for Scotland and used as a nature conserve.

The Isle of Skye Derived from the Norse ‘Ski’ (Cloud) and ‘Ey’ (Island). Known in Gaelic as ‘An t-Eilean Sgitheanach’ (The Winged Isle) or ‘Eilean a Cheo’ (The Misty Isle). The second largest island in Scotland (after Lewis and Harris in the outer Hebrides) and the best known of the islands in the inner Hebrides situated off the west coast of Scotland.

The Isle of Skye is Scotland’s second biggest tourist attraction after Edinburgh. Famous for its natural beauty, vibrant culture, history and wildlife, Skye is a popular destination for visitors wanting a glimpse of the diversity of the Scottish Highlands in one accessible location or an ideal starting point to explore the inner and outer Hebrides.

Skye’s natural beauty is legendary. The island’s dramatic mountains drop away to an intricate coastline reveals a complicated network of peninsulas, inlets, bays and islands, with occasional hidden beaches of soft white sand. The jagged Cuillin Ridge acts as a ‘back-bone’ to Skye and are considered by many to be the only ‘true’ mountains in the United Kingdom!

Wildlife lovers will love the island, which offers opportunities to see animals, birds, flora and fauna that are rarely seen on the mainland, from sea eagles to pygmy shrews to red deer. Those visitors who are either patient or lucky may unexpectedly come upon an awe-inspiring golden eagle soaring through the air or a playful otter on the beach.

The Isle of Skye offers its visitors opportunities to glimpse a fascinating past and to witness a unique contemporary culture. History can be seen at every turn. Many standing stones can be seen on the island’s skyline, some of which still display Pictish carvings. Evidence of the island’s more recent history exists in the eerie deserted settlements at, among locations, Boreaig, Lorgill and Tusdale, where in the 19th Century crofters were forced from their homes in the Highland Clearances, to make room for sheep. Skye’s population still suffers as a result of the Highland Clearances, but has been rising since the middle of the twentieth century.

Contemporary society on the Isle of Skye remains largely traditional. Estimates suggest that around half of the island’s residents are Gaelic speakers and the most common religion is the Free Church, a strict Christian denomination that demands a strict observance of the Sabbath. The Island has a lively traditional music scene, but signs that the times are changing could be seen in the rapidly growing Isle of Skye music festival that sees rock and pop acts descending on the island each year.
