Isle of Mull Mull is one the largest island of the Hebrides. In shape it is extremely irregular and its coast – line is so much indented that it measures around 250 miles in circumference while the longest walk in a beeline across the island would be just 30 miles and the shortest only 3. The southern and eastern part is mountainous , the peaks varying from 1,500 to over 3,000 feet in height. The northern portion of the island is hilly, but no eminence attains an elevation of 1.500 feet. Tobermory 'the Well of Mary' is the chief town in the island of Mull. Founded in 1788 by the Society for the Encouragement of the British Fisheries it has not realized the hopes of its founders by becoming an important fishing station. It stand on the shore of a bay which affords safe and spacious anchorage and is protected by the small island of Calve , much as Oban is by Kerrera. On weekdays it is connected with Mingarry in Ardnamurchan.

Isle of Mull

One of the most beautiful of the Western Isles is the Isle of Mull, which is commonly called Mull, or Muile in traditional Scottish Gaelic. This Scottish island is very easy to get to. The landscape of Mull covers three hundred and thirty eight miles in total, making Mull the fourth biggest island in Scotland, or the second biggest island of the Inner Hebrides. The recent residents population for Mull, Iona and Ulva is calculated at just over 1800, but the number of people increases dramatically during the summer, due to the influx of tourists and holidaymakers.

The capital of Mull is Tobermory, which was the only burgh on the island until 1973. Both the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Iona lie just off the west coast of Scotland. A great number of visitors arrive all year-round from the mainland. The main link is from Oban, where guests can catch the ferry and enjoy the trip, arriving at Mull relaxed, refreshed and ready to enjoy their stay, and there is plenty of excellent accommodation in Mull. There are ferry links from Oban to Craignure, and also a ferry from Kilchan to Tobermory, and there is a further ferry crossing from Lochaline. It is recommended that you book the ferry in advance, as you are required to be in the port around forty minutes prior to the ferry’s departure. The Lochaline crossing is probably the cheapest option and most of the local people usually use this service. There are other ferries from Mull which travel to the other islands nearby; their departure times vary during the seasons and extreme weather.

Tobermory is the main town of the Isle of Mull, and has lovely colourful buildings along the sea front. The beauty of the town and the lovely accommodation available make it well worth staying in Tobermory, as it is a great place to relax. There are many superb restaurants, shops, and cafés, and you can also take boat trips to see the whales and dolphins that play in the sea around Mull. Craignure is well worth day trip and also has a range of excellent accommodation. There are lovely walks around the area, and you could visit the castles of Duart and Torrosay.

In Mull you can enjoy spectacular views of the rocky hills, high mountain peaks, tumbling burns, spectacular waterfalls and rich wildlife. All this, combined with the local history, excellent accommodation and wonderful atmosphere means that you will experience a wonderful holiday. Mull is a great place for participating in many sports, but is also a haven for relaxation, so you can truly escape from the pressure of everyday life.

There is a wonderful range of beautiful guest houses, bed and breakfasts and self-catering accommodation all around the Isle of Mull. They are all well-located, in little towns or in rural spots along the hills and coastline. Demand for accommodation is very heavy during the summer, especially in July and August, therefore visitors are advised to try and book in advance.

There are day tours around the Isle of Mull and trips to other surrounding islands; the number of ferries going backward and forward between the islands and mainland make it a very popular tourist attraction. There are information shops in Oban where you can get help to organise your day trips and maps to plan routes on the Isle of Mull, to make sure you will not miss anything. On fine days, there are lovely beaches to explore and enjoy.

It is strongly recommended that you book your accommodation in advance, therefore please browse this list of accommodation in Mull to find the best bed and breakfast or guest house to meet your needs. There are many things to see and do in Mull, so enjoy yourself during this memorable holiday.
