Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland with a population of well over one million people, and is renowned for its lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere. It boasts a fantastic range of top quality attractions and many interesting places to visit. Many attractions offer free admission and are open all year round. Glasgow is known as a city of style with a strong culture and friendly people, and is an ideal place for observing, reading and learning about the history of Glasgow and Scotland. There are many entertainment venues to enjoy such as theatres, concerts, and opera, as well as live music in many of the city centre pubs and clubs. There is also an excellent range of shops in the city centre. Outstanding architecture can be seen throughout the city, including traditional Georgian and Victorian tenements and mansions reflecting Scotland’s rich history.

In Glasgow art and culture are extremely important, and there are many galleries and museums to see and enjoy. These contain both modern art and historic pieces, including the most famous Burrell collection at Pollok Park, and the work of world renowned Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His unique style as an architect, designer and artist is celebrated throughout the city and Scotland. The Modern Art Gallery and the Buchanan Galleries are also excellent places to visit. The oldest public museum in Scotland is the Hunterian museum, which was recently refurbished and has gained prestigious awards for its wealth of collections.

Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens are definitely worth visiting, displaying a huge collection of exotic plants from all over the world. The Gardens cover over twenty eight acres of land, with twelve conservatories, a variety of horticultural and botanical plants, many tree lined paths and a walk by the river of Kelvin. The Gardens also occupy one of the largest glasshouses in Britain, named Kibble Palace. The glasshouse occupies over 2126 square metres and was built in 1873. It contains plants from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the Far East, India and South Africa. The Botanic Gardens are just five minutes from the West End of Glasgow and admission is free. Several bus services go from the city centre to the Gardens, or it is a forty minute walk. Pushchairs and wheelchairs are available at reception, and there is a coffee shop and Exhibition Centre.

There is a lovely medieval Cathedral in Glasgow, just a short walk from the city centre. The Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings in Glasgow, and is over 105 feet high. The cathedral has medieval stained glass windows and the original tower, creating a unique atmosphere. The cathedral stone work dates back to 1135, during the times of King David, with additions to the building being made over a three hundred year period. The Cathedral is close to many other important buildings, such as St. Mungo’s Museum and Provand’s Lordship of Glasgow. There are tours available and entry is free. In 1451 Glasgow Cathedral had the same standing as the St. Paul’s Cathedral in Rome, as was declared by the Pope.

Glasgow, with all of its attractions, amenities, historical sites, and top shopping, is one of the most exciting cities in Europe. Whatever your preference there is always something to do in Glasgow, with fun to be had to suite all ages, budgets and tastes. The city is well known throughout Scotland and the UK as a true city of culture, with a proud heritage and beautiful surroundings. There are many budget accommodation options in the city centre of Glasgow and in the suburbs, including Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfasts, budget Hotels and Self Catering properties. There is something for everyone in Glasgow and it is a delightful city in which to spend your holiday.
