B&B - Bed & Breakfast Accommodations in the Edinburgh Area. Also please look at our Edinburgh Guest House Accommodation Section.

Edinburgh is, without a doubt, one of the top holiday destinations in Great Britain. This vibrant city boasts a dramatic history, diverse and thriving cultural scene, the wide Georgian streets of the New Town and the narrow wynds of the Old Town, unique landscape, fascinating architecture, luxury shopping opportunities and world-class restaurants many serving local fare. Accommodation is available to meet the needs of all visitors to the city, from luxury hotels to B&Bs and self-catering properties of all sizes. Edinburgh is a compact city and most areas are within walking distance of the city centre. Popular areas to stay include Edinburgh’s port, Leith, the Georgian New Town and the leafy areas to the south of the city such as Marchmont and Bruntsfield. The city also offers a perfect base to begin explorations into the rest of the beautiful country of Scotland.

Two ancient (and extinct!) volcanoes dominate the city centre. On one volcano, sits the breathtaking beauty of Edinburgh Castle, high above the main shopping area of Princes Street and above the busy Grassmarket area where the four star Apex Hotel offers a taste of luxury or the self-catering apartments at 21 Cordiner’s Land, Castle Apartment and Castle Wynd Apartment. Taking the visitor back in time, a walk down the Royal Mile passes numerous places of historic interest including St Gile’s Cathedral and John Knox’s House and accommodation options such as The Bank Hotel. The Royal Mile finishes at twelfth century Holyrood Palace, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland and previous home to many kings and queens of Scotland including Mary Queen of Scots. The Palace backs onto Holyrood Park, the largest green space in the centre of any European City at 650 acres. The park is dominated by ‘Arthur’s Seat’ the second of Edinburgh’s volcano, which offers spectacular views across the city.

Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

Edinburgh is a great place to have your holiday. Famous for its Castle which forms the backdrop to the city centre, Edinburgh has a medieval feel and a unique tranquility. Bed and breakfast accommodation has been popular in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland for many years. Many families have responded to the great increase in demand for an alternative to hotel accommodation, and the result is the wide variety of Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses which can now be found in Scotland. Tourism is one of the leading industries in Scotland and has greatly strengthened the Scottish economy over the last few decades. The standard of such accommodation is necessarily high, with professionalism, comfort and hospitality a requirement for meeting customers’ needs and for receiving a star rating from the Scottish Tourist Board. There are various levels of accommodation in Edinburgh which serve all budgets, most offering Full Scottish Breakfast, and many catering for dinner requirements if requested in advance. Some Bed and Breakfasts are also able to serve alcoholic beverages.

Bed and Breakfasts in Edinburgh as well as in other cities and towns in Scotland, are usually conveniently located near restaurants, pubs, local shops and other amenities. There are many city centre Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses in Edinburgh, in areas including the West End, Gilmore Place, Newington, Minto Street, Leith and many other surrounding areas, either within walking distance or a short bus ride from the city centre. Much of the accommodation is located close to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Princes Street. Advance bookings are recommended, and with such a wide variety of accommodation you will easily find somewhere to suit your needs. Accommodation owners in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland enjoy providing excellent Scottish hospitality and meeting guests from all over the world. Almost all accommodation owners will be able to provide guests with an information pack about places to eat, local entertainment, and where to visit in the local area.

Bed and Breakfasts in Scotland are traditionally family run with privately owned premises, with the owners usually living in part of the building. This type of accommodation is often the best value for money. Bed and Breakfasts usually accommodate up to six people and they may not require strict licenses. Guest Houses usually offer more guest bedrooms and can accommodate well above six people with no legal limitations. All Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses are obliged to comply with a range of regulations and restrictions including fire safety certification.

The current market trend shows that there is an increasingly high demand for short term holiday accommodation in Edinburgh and throughout the whole of Scotland, which has lead to an increase in exceptionally good Bed and breakfast and Guest House accommodation. Most accommodation is located near to historical sites such as Edinburgh castle, Holyrood Palace, and the National Museums and Galleries, as well as other activities such as golfing, walking, fishing, climbing and many other attractions.

Tourist attractions in the city range from world-class museums and art galleries to tours of the haunted underground city at Mary King’s to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Children will enjoy the interactive exhibits at Our Dynamic Earth that chronicle the history of our earth, watching sharks at Deep Sea World and much smaller creature at Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World. Adult’s may enjoy the delights of The Scotch Whisky Experience, the traditional Scottish music at many of the pubs in the city and the world-class quality cultural performances at the many top quality venues around the city.

Edinburgh is internationally renowned for its festivals, many of which take place during the month of August. Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival have been taking place, in a variety of forms since the 1940s. Edinburgh Book Festival is the biggest literary festival in the world. The Military Tattoo showcases international military talent from around the world against the magnificent backgroud of Edinburgh Castle. Other festivals include Edinburgh Film Festival, Edinburgh Jazz Festival and the Mela, a festival celebrating multiculturalism in the city. The city is very busy during the month of August and accommodation should be booked as early as possible.

Visitors to Edinburgh can choose from an extremely wide range of accommodation, all offering different benefits. Edinburgh’s seaside resort of Portabello is a short bus ride from the city centre and offers many guest-houses, including Straven Guest House. St Valery Guest House and Learmonth Hotel are located in the city’s West End, convenient for Edinburgh airport and Murrayfield, the Scottish national rugby stadium. Visitors may prefer the trendy bars on George Street in the heart of the New Town, where Edinburgh’s newest stylish boutique hotel Tigerlily is situated. Ann House is in the fashionable area of Stockbridge surrounded by unique and individual bars and shops. The Tantallon B&B is a little further from the city centre in the exclusive Grange area of the city. Newington, about 1 mile from Princes Street offers a range of budget accommodation, B&Bs and Guest Houses including Clan Walker Guest House and Southside Guest House.
