The Highland village of Aviemore, located in the heart of the stunning Cairngorm National Park, has become a year-round top attraction for tourists wanting to take part in outdoor activities in some of the most beautiful scenery that Scotland has to offer. Visitors to the Highlands will experience one of the last truly wild regions of Western Europe and yet Aviemore is easily accessible by car, train and bus from cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow in all but the worst Scottish weather!

Aviemore was first developed as a ski-resort in the mid-1960's. However Walking and Watersports, as well as mountain-biking, pony-trekking and fly-fishing are popular, with facilities available for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. The wide range of outdoor and sporting activities on offer mean that Aviemore particularly attracts the more adventurous tourists. However, Aviemore is a destination that truly has something to offer everyone, from skiing, walking and white-water rafting to wildlife watching, whisky tasting and sampling the traditional cuisine. Whoever you are and whatever your interests, a holiday in Aviemore and the surrounding area is a chance to get away from everything and enjoy the warm traditional Scottish Highland welcome and hospitality.

Aviemore is famous for it’s ski centre and opportunities to take part in snow sports on the dramatic Cairngorm Mountains, the most popular resort for snow sports in the UK. Skiing and snowboarding lessons are available for all abilities at several different schools and protective clothing can be bought or hired from the plethora of ski shops in the area. In spring and summer, walking and mountain biking opportunities are plentiful and, for those feeling a little less energetic, a trip on the UK’s highest and fastest funicular mountain railway will take you up to see the panoramic views and to sample the local cuisine of Ptarmigan Restaurant, the highest restaurant in the UK.

Aviemore

The beautiful Scottish town of Aviemore is located south of Inverness city in the North of Scotland, next to Cairngorms National Park in the heart of the highlands.

Aviemore is an historic town dating back to the 1600s, and there are many interesting sites within the town and the surrounding area. A fine example which can still be seen today is the circle of the old stone which dates back four hundred years. There is a large amount of evidence which confirms that Aviemore has a long history of inhabitants and which points to its importance in Scottish history. Aviemore is surrounded by many Ridgid Mountains, pine slopes, burns, valleys and forest areas. The town is overlooked by the spectacular scenery of the Monadhliath and Cairngorm Mountains, which extend through the Cairngorms National Park with over 3800 square kilometers of land. Beneath the town are the valleys where ancient Caledonian pinewood can be seen, amidst forest and moorland, marshlands and lochs. The stunning landscape of this part of Scotland makes it one of the most beautiful places in the country to visit.

There are a number of outdoor activities available throughout the year, including golfing, water sports, skiing, walking and fishing. The great walk from Grantown On Spey to Dalwhinnie is very enjoyable and full of adventure with the most spectacular views of the rest of Scotland. There is a very famous whisky distillery where Scotland’s national drink can be tasted and bought, and recommendations are given on whiskies from various parts of the country. In Aviemore there is still a steam railway (one of the oldest steam trains in Scotland) to visit and see the old heavy machinery which revolutionized the industry of Scotland.

Aviemore’s famous new 18-hole golf course opened for the recent championship golfing tournament and includes one of the longest par-5 holes in Scotland. The Aviemore Spey Valley Golf Course, located near Old Dalfaber Golf Course, is one of the best places to play golf in Aviemore and offers astounding views of the surrounding Cairngorm Mountains. The enormous and beautiful Cairngorm National Park is one of the best in Scotland, and indeed the United Kingdom. It has worldwide renown as one the most important nature conservation areas in Europe. The second highest mountain is Ben Macdui which is over 4000 ft and has a mountain range of over 50 miles. The park is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife including some rare species. One of the most intriguing legends of the area is that of the enormous hairy creature which inhabits the national park, with its huge feet, long head, and gigantic arms and legs. The creature is thought by many to be an original inhabitant of the area, and has been witnessed by dozens of local people!

Aviemore is a lovely place to rest and unwind and have a great holiday in Scotland. This little town is the perfect base for mountaineering, skiing, and water sports, and for exploring the area’s nature and wildlife. There is a range of high standard accommodation from which to choose, including bed and breakfasts, guest houses, self catering properties and hotels. Guests will enjoy the traditional Scottish hospitality, and the many good restaurants, café’s, camping & skiing shops, supermarkets, pubs and local interesting shops to be explored. Aviemore really is the perfect place in Scotland to visit and have a fulfilling holiday.

A whole network of friendly villages make deciding where to stay in the Cairngorm National Park a difficult prospect. Aviemore village itself is one of the bigger villages in the area and caters well to visitiors with all the amenities that a tourist might need.

Accommodation options range from self-catering apartments at Lynwig House and Apartment Aviemore to a full range of B&Bs such as Dunroamin B&B or Cairngorn Hotel that is situated on the main street just opposite the train station. For the visitor who would like to experience the wildness of the landscape, whilst staying in easy reach of Aviemore Village, Pinewood Chalets are only a short walk from the village centre but offer secluded chalets amogst the pine forest on the banks of the River Spey.

Boat of Garten, is 8 miles northeast of Aviemore and the Strathspey Steam Railway runs between the two villages. Boat of Garten is popular in particular with visitors who have an interest in wildlife, and the nearby RSPB wildlife reserve in Abernethy Forest on the banks of Loch Garten is one of the best places in Scotland to view osprey. The Spey River also offers opportunities for salmon and trout fishing. Visitors staying at Fraoch Lodge can look forward to open fires and traditional home-cooked meals after a satisfying day exploring the locale.

The area also boasts a selection of stately Victorian country houses that have been tastefully converted into comfortable hotels. Corrour House enjoys a rural location with beautiful grounds and stunnig views of the dramatic Cairngorms. Dalrachney House and Fairwinds Hotel are situated near to the tiny rural village of Carberry. In addition to excellent accommodation, Dalrachney House also offers a choice of restaurant and bistro each serving local food in a stunning location. Fairwinds Hotels offers the choice of either staying in the main hotel or a timber chalet in the hotel’s extensive grounds.

The Rowan Tree Country Hotel near Loch Alvie was originally built as a coaching Inn and offers accommodation and traditional food in a unique and historical setting within easy reach of Aviemore village.
